The artist Dan Bodner, who was by chance standing several feet away with a friend when the shootout started, turned and ran into an alleyway; his friend, looking back towards the shootout, fell over Bodner's bike. In the alleyway, Bodner found himself trapped with one of the gangsters, who was standing at the head of the alleyway shooting out.
